Art Gallery Visit #2

Questions about the exhibit:
1. Decade Contemporary Collection 2002-2012
2. The theme was this decade.

Questions about the physical space:
1. Direct light but in two of the artworks they used fluorescent light in the actual works.
2. The walls were white.
3. Materials used where the fluorescent lights and one work of art was set inside a glass case.
4. The movement seemed to be in a circular movement around the space of the gallery.

Questions about the artwork:
1. They are put together neatly and almost in a symmetrical fashion.
2. Two of the artworks use light but all three have numerous colors in them.
3. They are all very different shapes or ideas. One is a set of fluorescent lights in a long row, one is six lights all in boxes, and one looks like a mash of things put together with what looks to be a lot like glue.
4.The ones in fluorescent lights are just mounted on the wall and set on the flood but the last in a glass case.
5. They all have a card or plaque mounted on the wall giving the title and all the information about the artwork on them.
6. They are all in the same area. If you stand in the middle of each you can see them all with out having to move closer to any of them.

Video Review of Art Movements

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed.
I chose to watch the Matisse and Picasso video simply because I wanted to learn more about the two artists, especially Matisse who I am not as familiar with as I am more familiar with Picasso.

I decided to watch the video based on Dada and Surrealism because I am not very familiar with the Dada movement and I felt that I wanted to learn more about it through video. I am more familiar with Surrealism, although I do not know very much about it, so I felt that the video would be a great way to learn more about it.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
From watching this video, I learned that the two artists are very different from one another in the ways that they created works of art, and also in their thoughts and thought processes. I also learned in this video that Picasso eventually became a part of the Cubism movement by creating the first collage work of art.

In this video, I have learned that Kurt Schwitters had began using various different materials to create works of art, using pieces of almost anything that he had found that had been discarded. The Dada movement came about as a reaction to World War I, and I feel that it explains the styles of the works of art that came from the artists who chose to create according to the movement.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

Even though the videos were very long, these videos had to be to talk about the important figures of each movement. After watching these videos I was better able to understand the readings because the videos added the detail I needed for the concepts.

Mask Making

I chose these three masks because they caught my attention. They weren't just of one color, like many I had seen. They are colorful and all three look as if they are trying to tell a story. The design and craftsmen ship is amazing and very detailed.

The first mask appears to be of a long face. The eyes are left open, for there is just a space without actual eyeballs. The mask appears to be all of one surface, there is not actual texture on the surface of the wood, but the designs all over the mask give visual texture.

The second mask has a lot going on. There are many different lines, designs, and textures. The shells towards the top of the mask are real, giving it a sort of rigid texture. It is full of color and different patterns, that all connect to one another. The eyebrows and flaps on either side towards the ear also have texture.

The third mask has texture all over it. There is texture at the top, where the fuzz and feathers are. There is texture at the bottom where it looks like it could be hay or straw fanning out from the chin. A ton of color is present, along with many lines, patterns, and designs.

All three of the masks are visually appealing.

In this mask I used the elements of Line in direction of horizontal. I also used the element of color and value. I believe this mask have the principle of proportion. Creating this mask was a bit of a challenge. While trying to utilize ideas from other masks that i researched along with ideas of my own. I had fun painting and stuffing the mask. My children tried to take over my project which i thought was hilarious. Overall I learned a lot about the African culture while creating the mask. I enjoyed this project.

Module Ten-Video Review

1) The two videos that I watch were African Art and Chinese Art: Treasures of the National Palace Museum. I choose these two videos because they both sounded most interesting to me.

2) In the African Art video I learned that art is a big part of there culture and very important. Also art in Africa is part of their everyday life. In the Chinese Art: Treasure of the National Palace Museum I learned that there is art in the museum that almost no one has ever seen outside of the museum.

3) The videos related to the text pretty well they were both mentioned in the text and the video just gave me more of visual perspective on what I read in the text.

4) The films were very informative and they helped me get more of a visual for what I read. Also the videos went a little bit more in depth because each video was a specific video on a specific type of art and had more of a luxury to go more in depth than the text.

Week 9: Hand Drawing

1) It wasn’t that bad. It was hard at times to keep my hand straight and not shake or move it all the time.

2) I decided to use pencil because knowing I wouldn’t be able to keep my hand steady I thought it would be a lot easier to use pencil over charcoal.

3) It was very hard. In my drawings I think you can clearly tell which one is my strong hand and with one is my dominant. Its very hard to use your non-dominant hand for something you are not use too.

4) My drawings aren’t great drawings but I think they are successful studies. My hands have a lot of similarities but in my drawings you can tell which hand is my strong hand. In the drawing of my right hand you can tell I pressed a little harder with the non-dominant hand and tried to compensate for that.

5) No I wouldn’t consider using my dominant hand. I feel like a new born trying to draw or write for the first time. I guess if I really tried I could get better at it but as of now I am pretty bad and I think I should stick to just using my dominant hand.

Module 9 Video Review

1.1 I chose the two videos The Drawings of Michelangelo, and El Greco: Rediscovering a Masterbecause the titles looked interesting.  I remember reading about Michelangelo and Greco in the textbook and I found them fascinating.  I wanted to learn a little bit more about them.

2.The Drawings of Michelangelo talks about the many different sketches that Michelangelo created.  All of the speakers considered him a creator when they looked at his sketches.  It also talked about why Michelangelo destroyed his own sketches.  However, current people within the art world are glad that he wasn’t able to destroy them all because they help them have an insight into his life.  El Greco: Rediscovering a Master talked about the rediscovery of El Greco.  Most people had forgotten about him until Picasso and Rusinol helped his work reemerge into the artistic world.  It continues to prove how El Greco’s work influenced that of Picasso and Rusinol.  You can see similar techniques and characteristics within all of their art.

 3. The videos further the information that the textbook talks about.  For example, the textbook talks about the Sistine chapel and Michelangelo.  It also mentions El Greco within the textbook.  These videos take this information deeper and expand our knowledge of these artists.

4. I found these films interesting.  They helped me understand what life was like for El Greco and showed me that Michelangelo was ashamed of his sketches because they showed people that he second guessed himself.  They take the readings and art concepts to a new level because they show how the artists used each concept within their own work.  The videos also show how the concepts were interpreted by the artist in order to make it their own work.

Blog #8

1.       I choose to watch Cataclysm: The Black Death Visits Tuscany because it looked interesting to me.  I like to choose videos that pop out at me when I go to choose one.  I have always found the Black Death fascinating so I really enjoyed the video.

2.       More Human Than Human talked about how images run every societies life, why do images have a huge impact and power over people, and different arts that were created in different cultures throughout time.  When they talked about Egypt, I was stunned at the differences that were made there between what was created before them.  Cataclysm: The Black Death Visits Tuscany is about Sienna and Florence and how they overcame the Black Death.  It talks about how the obsession with the higher power brought their world into the Higher Renaissance.

3.       The videos stress the importance of what we read in the textbook.  The textbook talked about the history of the world and how art had an impact on it.  These videos, More Human than Human, andCataclysm: The Black Death Visits talk more about the history of art as the world progressed into the present.  It shows how we got to where we are now.

4.       I found the videos extremely fascinating.  They stress what happened throughout history.  As a History concentration, this was right up my alley.  I really enjoyed learning more about how art has progressed into what it is today.  It also shows how the art concepts and principals came about. Looking through the progression, you can tell which concepts and principals came about when.
